Tracking Macronutrients For Maximum Muscle and Fat Loss

My prior posts this week have centered around exercise prescription.  Today, I wanted to discuss a VITAL component if YOU want to BUILD MUSCLE, LOSE FAT and WIN an event.  As the Title of this post suggests I am going to discuss the importance of Tracking Nutrition (macronutrient) intake for a dieting Bodybuilder. 

Perhaps the biggest mistake young and even older Bodybuilders make is not tracking exactly what goes into their body.   I have been to many bodybuilding events and asked athletes their current macronutrient profile only to get an answer of,

“I eat chicken and salad five times a day.” 

What does that mean?  How much chicken?  How many grams of salad?  What is in the salad? 

Where is the Precision?

Gracious, how are going to beat anyone with such a lackluster dietary approach?  PRECISION WINS!  Most of the TIME, unless you are a THOROUGHBRED 🙂 Another Story..

Hold up, back up!!! What do I mean by Macronutrients?  Macronutrients are Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fats which are the contents of all foods.

Protein =~ 4 calories per gram

Carbohydrates = ~ 4 calories per gram

Fat = ~ 9 calories per gram

I guess I should also mention alcohol that could be considered the 4th macronutrient.

To become a great Natural Bodybuilder or Fitness Competitor you must be aware of the macronutrients in the foods you choose and the content of your diet.  All athletes are different in macronutrient ratios for dieting and during an offseason phase to meet their goals.  So…

How are you going to know your macronutrient requirements to meet your goals if you do not track exactly what is going in your body?  Fact is you CANNOT KNOW:)


Use Excel to track and READ LABELS

Use a Software Program Online to Track (Make sure it is Precise)

Get a Paper and Notebook and Write Everything Down, reading labels (My Favorite) 🙂

Record Food Items, Quantities, followed by Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fats of Those Foods at Those Quantities.
